Learn How to Crochet Baby Blankets

My oldest daughter once asked me, "How did you learn to crochet baby blankets?" I told her that my grandmother had taught me the basics of crochet, such as how to make a chain, single crochet, double crochet, etc. I also told her that another good way is to read books, especially pattern books, to learn more of the difficult stitches. (This was before the days of internet research!)

These days I would suggest that anyone wanting to learn how to crochet baby blankets, or any other crochet items, should go online to watch videos. The calculate I suggest videos as opposed to just books is that in the videos you can see how to hold the yarn and hook, as well as any other steps needed to make obvious stitches.

Afghan Blanket Knitting Pattern

I've found YouTube to be a great reserved supply in seeing these videos. You naturally type in "crochet" or "crochet baby blanket" in the crusade bar and you'll find lots of how-to videos.

You can also go to Google and type in the words "crochet videos" or "crochet baby blanket videos" to bring up lots of results.

Of course, there are many separate patterns for baby blankets and afghans. Each pattern will have separate stitches that you'll need to learn, if you don't already know how. Most times the patterns will have instructions for the basic stitches and other more industrialized stitches. If you're new to crocheting, I'd suggest starting out with a very basic pattern. I've found fairly easy patterns to effect are granny squares or ripples.

If your pattern calls for stitches that you're not well-known with and the instructions don't seem clear, do another crusade for videos using that exact stitch in your crusade term. For example, in Google or YouTube you might try searching for "double crochet stitch" or "double crochet stitch video."

Another great way to learn is like I did, by having person experienced show you. If you don't have a grandmother, mother, aunt, etc. Who is skilled at crocheting, try request some of the women you join together with such as co-workers, church groups, friends and other house members. Many churches have a time when the ladies get together and bring in their assorted craft projects. This would be a great resource.

Good luck!

Choose sufficient fabric to match the desired length of the blanket. If you will be using it on the bed, allow for overhang that can be tucked in on each side and near the foot end of the bed. Generally add ten to twelve inches onto the length and width of your bed. If you will be adding fringe to your blanket, plan to add an further twelve inches to the blanket's top, bottom, and side dimensions.

Once you have purchased your fabric, turn it upside down on a large table or on the outside of the floor. Trim the edges of the fabric so that they are even. If you planned to create a blanket without fringing, you are done.

Otherwise, use a yardstick and a fabric pen and start drawing horizontal lines about six inches from each edge of the blanket. Next, draw vertical lines down from the horizontal lines. Space these lines about ½ to ¾ of an inch apart depending on your personal preference. Continue this process until every edge has vertical lines from the main line to the edge.

Using fabric shears, cut along each edge. Continue cutting until you have fringe on each side. For a whimsical feel for any child or infant's blanket, use the zig zagged pinking shears.

A polar fleece blanket is the easiest "sewing" project in the universe. It is an excellent craft project for children of all ages, as no needle is required. A cozy fleece blanket can be a thoughtful, easy gift for any occasion. Beat a winter's chill by having a fleece blanket on hand. The best part is that you can tell everybody that you made it yourself.

How To Crochet Granny Squares

Granny squares are a classic representation of crocheting. They are all over the place, in afghans, lacy tablecloths, as motifs on women's tops. I have any gorgeous doilies that my great grandmothers made based on the basic granny square. Learning how to crochet granny squares can be a minute tricky, especially if you are a beginner. However, once you learn how, you will be able to turn out many gorgeous projects using this uncomplicated formula.

A few things will help you form out a new crocheting pattern. Keep a completed granny quadrate with you while you are crocheting. It helps to touch it, to look at it from any angles, to see a concrete example of your end goal. Also, keep the whole of the task in mind. Instead of getting bogged down with where to place stitches or if you did it right, think about how they look. Knowing what it should look like will help you recognize when you make mistakes.

Afghan Blanket Knitting Pattern

1. To begin crocheting a granny square, chain (ch) five stitches. Join the ends together with a slip stitch (ss). This makes your base loop. The squares are worked in the round. This means that instead of turning directions at the end of a row, you will connect the ends of your work together and crochet in one continuous circle.

2. Ch three. Make two double crochet (dc) stitches into the loop, but not into an individual chain stitch. This is the first "chunk" section of the square. Ch two. This makes the corner. Dc three into the loop. Repeat the "ch two, dc three" process until you have four sections and four corners. Join the last two chain stitches to the top angle of the first section with a ss. You have completed the first round of your granny square.

3. To make the next round, begin by ch four, three for the part of the section and one for the open space. Crochet three dc, ch two and crochet three more dc in the angle loop (not the individual stitches). This is the corner. Ch one to make a space over the section from the last row. Repeat the angle production process in each loop, with one chain in the middle of each corner. End with three dc, two ch, two dc, and a ss in the third chain from the starting of the round.

4. For the next round, begin with four ch, three for the part of the section, and one for the space. Make three dc in every one chain space from the last round. Make three dc, two ch, three dc in every two chain space, creating corners. At the end of the round, make two dc instead of three and ss to the third chain to generate the last section. Repeat this round as many times as needed until your granny quadrate is big enough.

With the knowledge of how to crochet granny squares, you can experiment and make all sorts of unique projects. Try using a different colors for each round. Instead of production a granny square, why not make a granny pentagon or hexagon? All sorts of other creative options can be discovered, as the granny quadrate is a uncomplicated base to all sorts of flower and geometric shapes.

This blanket is usually nearby 36" x 52" and while it's excellent for manufacture the crib look nice and holding an older baby warm at night, it is too big to swaddle a small baby. · Swaddling Blankets -- This blanket is the small blanket you use when the baby first comes home from the hospital. usually lightweight, it is about 30" square and is excellent to wrap tightly nearby a baby to give them that 'in the womb' feeling. This is a good blanket to swaddle a baby and give her a sense of protection when putting her down for a nap.

· Receiving Blankets -- If you want to get the most use possible, knit a blanket, knit a receiving blanket that is 34" x 36" is perfect. This size is works best because it's small enough to snuggle a small baby but also excellent for the baby to carry nearby when he reaches toddler age. This size works great in baby carriers and car seats and is pretty much an all-purpose blanket.

Now that you know the standard sizes, all you have to do is rule on the baby blanket that best suits your needs. Once you've made that decision, choose your beloved pattern, buy your yarn and get those knitting needles clicking.

It is best to keep the instructions as easy and optical as possible when you began. Find a nice basic pattern, so it won't be confusing, but yet will be very rewarding when completed. There are basic patterns and projects are all over the internet and you will be able to more than you will know what to do with.

Crochet can be very reasonable or outrageous. But to get started the only cost you unquestionably need to incur would be a crochet hook, which is only a couple of dollars and a skein or two of yarn. This is one hobby that can be as reasonable or as expensive as your budget allows.

I have seen hooks and brand new yarn in thrift stores and at yard sales. On the other hand you can go to a yarn shop and buy the most excellent and expensive yarn they have. Whether way you go, a single crochet stitch is the same. I don't buy the very expensive yarn but than the unquestionably cheap yarn is unquestionably no bargain. It will often shred or unravel, pill and be uneven on the skein. It will not wash well and you will end up wasting a lot of your time.

A nice basic yarn to learn with is the Red Heart 4 ply. This yarn is very good for scarves, hats, slippers, sweaters, afghans, and blankets. They have a large selection of colors and textures for just about any scheme you may want to make. I propose you stay away from eyelash yarn at the beginning because it would be very difficult to see your stitches and rows.

Hooks will vary slightly with the different brands. You will find that some have a more pointed end than others. Some tend to be blunt at the hook end and a bit flatten. Myself, I do not care for the blunt ends, as they do not go into the next stitch as cleanly as the pointed type tip. But this is just a personal selection and you may find it just the opposite.

You will need to select your pattern, and then you will decree on the supplies needed. These will be chosen according to the pattern you decree to begin with. My suggestion for a beginner would be to use a hook size in the middle of H through J. anyone of these would be a good size to handle and to be able to see your stitches and rows as you crochet.

Yarn suggestion is a worsted weight yarn like Red Heart four ply as mentioned above. Keep the color shade from medium to light. The dark blues, browns and black make it very difficult to see your stitches and rows and when you are studying you will have trouble adequate without this problem.

Print off the abbreviations below. You will want to keep them handy until you are well-known with them. This is a short list just to help you learn how to crochet the basics. With this list you will be able to crochet any of the many granny squares and other projects you are sure to come over and save.
